Chapter Twelve

Without warning, Kimberly suddenly turned and left. Cat stared after her before dropping her gaze to her empty arms still positioned for the hug. Lowering them to her sides, she recounted Kimberly’s words. Because of Jonathan’s gambling habit, he’d endangered his wife. Kimberly’s palpable fear rushed over Cat, forming goose bumps along her flesh. She glanced about the room to assure herself she was still alone.

She brushed off the silly feeling of fear. Whomever was behind the threats, wouldn’t be here. Guys like that would undoubtedly stand out in a high-society crowd. At least she hoped.

Cat pulled on her bottom lip. Paintings were undoubtedly being replaced—right beneath Garrick’s nose. Were Kimberly and her husband so desperate to save themselves they’d resort to stealing? She hadn’t wanted to think the married couple were suspects.

Why?

Because they were from the upper class. Cat closed her eyes at her foolishness. Had their status blinded her so much she thought temptations didn’t affect them?

To some degree … yes. Thanks to Natalie, she saw how money could make one act pious and self-centered, but somehow it also looked like it protected them from the desperate actions of someone with nothing.

She had to tell Garrick.

Cat left the room intent on tracking him down when Kimberly’s steady voice came back to her—Not a word to anyone!

Her steps slowed, then turned her around. What was she to do? She grabbed her phone from the bag on her shoulder and checked the time. Enough remained before lunch she could grab a few moments in the prayer room.

Though God heard her wherever she was, the room offered a quiet solitude the rest of the house lacked. After climbing the stairs, she made her way past the childhood rooms and closed the door silently behind her.

The scent of Garrick’s cologne still lingered in the air, tickling her heart. She knelt down and remembered their shoulders brushing against each other, which only took her back to their shared intimacy in the kitchen. Working side by side took their friendship up a level. They were sharing more. Making more memories. Memories she’d have to be satisfied with when she left, for it was impossible to expect anything more.

With a sigh, she bowed her head against her clasped hands and prayed for wisdom. Wisdom not only in how to deal with her growing feelings for the wrong man, but also how to deal with the importance of the paintings and the struggling couple. “Where do I go from here, Lord? Kimberly didn’t give me time to answer, so I never agreed not to tell Garrick. Yet it feels wrong to betray her without knowing more.”

While she waited for an answer, a thump from the hall broke the silence.

Cat rose to her feet and silently padded to the door. It pulled open without a sound. She glanced both directions and caught a shadow stealing around the corner. Her body temperature cooled as a cold sensation crept up her spine. Who was sneaking around up here and why? With her heart pounding in her ears, Cat followed on tiptoe.
